What Are MCP Servers and Why Should You Care?

MCP turns a brain in a jar into a brain with hands.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers are universal adapters that let AI connect to external services. Without MCP, AI can only think and write. With MCP, it can send emails, scrape websites, manage Google Drive, read spreadsheets, and interact with APIs. It turns a brain in a jar into a brain with hands.
You've probably heard the term MCP thrown around in AI circles. It sounds technical. It is technical. But what it does is simple: MCP servers let your AI talk to the outside world.
What Does MCP Actually Mean?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Think of it as a universal adapter. Just like a USB port lets any device connect to your computer, MCP lets any AI connect to any service.
Without MCP, your AI is stuck in a conversation. It can think and write, but it can't do anything. With MCP, it can send emails, scrape websites, manage files on Google Drive, read spreadsheets, create documents, and interact with APIs.
It goes from a brain in a jar to a brain with hands.

Without MCP: a brain in a jar. With MCP: a brain with hands.
How We Use MCP at The Vibe Jam
Inside Cursor, we have several MCP servers connected:
- Firecrawl: Scrapes and maps websites, returning clean data for analysis
- Google Drive / Docs / Sheets: Reads and writes to our documents and spreadsheets
- SendGrid: Drafts and sends emails
- Zapier: Connects to hundreds of other services
When we tell Cursor to "scrape this competitor's website and summarize it into a Google Doc," it uses Firecrawl to get the data and Google Docs MCP to write the summary. We used this exact workflow to clone and redesign a client website in a day. Two MCP servers working together in a single prompt.
Start with one MCP server. Firecrawl is a great first pick because it lets your AI read any website. Once you're comfortable, add Google Drive access. Each new MCP server multiplies what your AI can do.
Why This Matters for the Future
MCP is how AIs will eventually communicate with each other. Your personal AI will talk to a store's AI to make a purchase. Your business AI will talk to a client's AI to schedule a meeting.

Your AI will talk to a store's AI. A client's AI will talk to yours.
This isn't science fiction. The protocol exists today. We explore this future in In 5 Years, You'll Shop by Talking to AI. The infrastructure is being built right now. The people who understand MCP early will have a significant advantage as these systems mature.
